CITY TALKS: Tikanga in Architecture — a future with us and for us

June 19 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us this month as we celebrate Matariki — the Māori New year — with City Talks: Tikanga in Architecture — a future with us and for us, a panel kōrero featuring five emerging architectural designers, artists and thinkers on Monday 19 June, 6pm, at City Gallery Wellington.
At the crest of a cycle of change, we look back whilst striding confidently into the future — asking, what might the future of a truly bicultural Aotearoa look like? Emerging Māori architects and architectural graduates discuss what the future of our built environment needs to be: beautiful, inclusive, safe, equitable and providing a platform for generations to come.
The panel is convened by Elisapeta Heta, Architectural Graduate, Jasmax, Ngātiwai, Waikato Tainui. The panel will comprise:
  • Te Ari Prendergast, Architectural Graduate, TOA Architects, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou
  • Amber Ruckes,  Architectural Graduate, Warren and Mahoney, Ngāi Tuhoe
  • Hana Scott, Architect, Strachan Group Architects, Ngāti Wakaue, Te Arawa, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Kahungungu
  • Whare Timu, Senior Architectural Graduate, Studio Pacific Architecture, Ngāti Kahungungu
This kōrero acknowledges the recent loss of pivotal thinker, architect and kaitiaki Rewi Thompson, his significant contribution to the built environment, to the education of architectural students and work with indigenous communities around the world. The discussion also looks to the future with the recent signing of Te Kawenata o Rata — bringing together a formal relationship between The New Zealand Institute of Architects and Ngā Aho.
Nau mai haere mai!
City Talks is an ongoing series initiated by the New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington Branch and is presented in partnership with City Gallery Wellington. Its purpose is to foster discussion about architecture for a broader audience in a city that cares to openly discuss ideas relevant to our future.
